Letter Frequency by Position
Both how often a letter is used and where it shows up matter for understanding English spelling patterns. Certain letters favor specific positions - for example, S commonly starts and ends words (due to plurals), while vowels like A and E dominate middle positions. Recognizing these location-specific patterns helps with word games and spelling.
S is the most common first letter at 11.2%, followed by P, B, C. Most five-letter words begin with consonants.
Vowels dominate the second position. A leads at 18.1%, with O, E, I also common. Early vowel placement is typical in English.
The middle position shows varied letter usage. A appears in 9.2% of words, followed by R, I, N.
Position four mixes vowels and consonants. E leads at 17%, with A, I, T also frequent.
S dominates endings at 29.2%. E, Y, A follow, reflecting common suffixes like -ed, -es, and -ly.
Vowel vs Consonant Distribution
Vowels play a significant role in English words. Although they represent only 5 of 26 letters in the alphabet, vowels appear as approximately 36.5% of all letters in five-letter English words. This makes sense because nearly every English word contains at least one vowel for pronunciation. Most five-letter words include 2 or 3 vowels.
