Use of Y as a Vowel
In most of the list, Y serves as the only vowel. We observed two common sound patterns: an "ih" sound (as in GLYPH and LYMPH) and an "ee" sound (as in PYGMY and GYPSY).
Why These Words Are So Uncommon
English word formation typically relies on A, E, I, O, or U for vowel sounds. Many no-vowel words come from Greek or Welsh roots, while others are interjections or stylized spellings. That mix explains both Y-based words like GLYPH and exceptions like CRWTH or CWTCH.
